Niki de Saint Phalle was best known for her sculptural female figures known as Nanas (means GIRLs in french) that are colourful, covered in playful lines and patterns, and crafted in a variety of shapes and sizes and poses. While we observe and study Niki de Saint Phalle's Nanas series this month - paying close attention to the figures' poses, lines and patterns as well as her use of joyful colours in her sculptures, let's create our own mini-sized Nana using air dry clay!
For this art project, we made this video that is divided into 4 parts:
Part 1: Making an armature
Part 2: Adding Air Dry Clay to the armature
Part 3: Painting the clay sculpture
Part 4: Finishing touch and varnish
Art Materials:
1. Aluminium foil
2. Aluminium wire (18 gauge was used in this demo)
3. Wire cutters
4. Air Dry Clay (Crayola brand was used in this demo) - Not sponsored
5. Paper bowl or plate (quick and easy substitute for wooden base with hole designed for holding wire armature)
6. Sculpting tools (craft sticks and fingers work well too!)
7. Tape (masking or painter tape)
8. Acrylic paints
9. Acrylic gloss varnish
10. Sand paper (optional)
