According to one of the many legends of the Lunar New Year, thousands of years ago, a monster named "Nian'' attacked villagers on the eve of a new year. Fortunately, a wise old man recognised Nian's aversion to loud noises, the colour red, and bright lights. That explains the red colour, fireworks, and lion dance we see today.
